Former Chinese ambassador to Poland Liu Guangyuan will take over as head of foreign ministry’s Hong Kong office. In this autonomous region he will replace Xie Feng - official press agency Xinhua reported on Wednesday.
Liu Guangyuan served as China's ambassador to Poland between 2018 to 2021. Before this mission he had also worked in Chinese embassies in Kenya and the United States - Hong Kong's RTHK station wrote.
"After serving as Chinese Ambassador to Poland for 3 years, it’s time to say goodbye to my friends. I cherish the memories of time spent in this great country, and will continue to promote good relations and friendly cooperation between China and Poland!" - Liu Guangyuan tweeted in April after his Polish mission came to an end.
In Poland, Liu was actively involved in Beijing's campaign aimed at improving China's image around the world. He was firmly defending his country's Communist government, especially against accusations of hiding real data regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.
The former ambassador used to publish pieces in some Polish media outlets and was very active on Twitter, where he would write in both English and Polish and get involved in heated disputes with the then U.S. ambassador Georgette Mosbacher. Twitter has been blocked in Mainland China.
Liu's predecessor in Hong Kong Xie Feng began his work there in 2017, and in February this year he has been promoted to Deputy Foreign Minister. He became widely known with his strenuous condemnation of the anti-government protests of 2019, which he likened to terrorism.
