On his way to the UN Climate Action Summit, French President Emmanuel Macron told "Le Parisien" on Monday that it is Poland that is blocking European Union's common efforts to protect the environment. He also called to put more pressure on all countries to step action against climate change.
On board of a plane flying to the United States, Macron reminded that at the EU summit in June, four member-states - Poland, Czech Republic, Estonia and Hungary - had blocked the resolution regarding climate neutrality, which all EU countries would have been expected to achieve by 2050.
According to "Le Parisien", the French President said the responsibility lies on Poland. "The truth is, only one (country) blocks it all - Poland," Macron said.
"My goal is to convince other countries to act," said the president and called upon the young to protest in Poland. "Let them go and protest in Poland! So they can help me to mobilise those whom I can't mobilise to change myself!" - "Le Parisien quoted Macron. "We need mutual mobilisation, so we could move forward faster and better. Positive pressure should be put on all," he added.
Commenting on Friday's protests against climate change that involved millions of young people all over the world, Macron stressed that they won't solve the problem. "Marching every Friday to announce that our planet is on fire is nice, but it doesn't solve the problem," Macron argued. Instead, as "Le Parisien" wrote, French President proposes undertaking joint and concrete action. "I'd prefer to organise each Friday huge (trash-picking) actions on rivers or at Corsican beaches," he said.
Macron went to New York on Monday to take part in the UN Climate Action Summit on the eve of the 74th Session of United Nations General Assembly. Leaders from around 60 countries will take part in the event.
