Elżbieta Witek from the ruling Law and Justice party was appointed as the new Marshal of Sejm on Friday. She replaced her fellow party member Marek Kuchciński who had resigned on Thursday amid private flights scandal.
Witek was backed by 245 MPs from the total of 419. Her rival from Civic Platform, the deputy speaker of the Sejm Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska received 135 votes, and deputy chief of the Polish People's Party, Urszula Pasławska - 29 votes.
Earlier on Friday, the Chancellery of the President announced that Andrzej Duda, on the request by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, recalled Elżbieta Witek as the member of the cabinet and the head of the Ministry of the Interior Affairs and Administration.
Witek will replace Marek Kuchciński who resigned on Thursday amid private flights scandal.
The new speaker of parliament will be replaced by the head of the secret services Mariusz Kamiński.
Witek's candidacy was rather unexpected, as in the beginning of June she was appointed President Duda as the head of the interior ministry. She replaced Joachim Brudziński who had won a seat in the European Parliament in May's election.
Before becoming the interior minister, Witek was the government spokesperson and the head of the politicial cabinet of former prime minister Beata Szydło. She also chaired the Sejm Ethics Committee.
