Over 1.000 coronavirus cases in Poland. Government drafts "Anti-crisis shield"

Health ministry informed on Wednesday (March 25) that 1051 cases of coronavirus infection have been confirmed in Poland. So far, 14 infected persons have died. The government also extended border closure for further 20 days, until April 13. Development minister Jadwiga Emilewicz informed the cabinet has accepted all provisions of draft legislation that would aid businesses and employees affected by the coronavirus crisis.

Poland has 1,051 confirmed coronavirus cases and 14 deaths, Poland's health ministry said on Wednesday (March 25) evening.

The ministry also informed about 1.615 hospitalised people and over 70.000 placed under quarantine.

Earlier on that day the government extended border closures until April 13, but reassured at the same time it would not affect movement of goods between countries.

Polish courts decided to postpone almost all proceedings, except the most urgent ones, until the end of April. This solution has been recommended by the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection.

The Polish government announced earlier this month that it would extend school, theatre and cinema closures until Easter and that it would allow people to leave their homes only for essential purposes.

"Anti-crisis shield"

The head of the development ministry, Jadwiga Emilewicz, said on Wednesday the provisions of the so-called "Anti-crisis shield" have been accepted by the government.

She added the package would be discussed together with the opposition. According to the minister, if the legislative work goes swiftly, the "Shield" should become effective on April 1.

"We want to slow down the virus, not the economy" - minister Emilewicz said.

According to the cabinet, the legislation will be based on five pillars. The first one would address the safety of employees, second would deal with financing of businesses, third - health protection, fourth - enforcing financial system, and fifth - public investments.

The legislation is to be the government's response to spreading coronavirus epidemic, and to help employees and businesses to survive difficult times.
