Over half a million drivers have already driven through the recently opened tunnel which is part of Warsaw's southern ring road. Some of them did some weird things to say the least, others acted in a downright dangerous and illegal manner. One of them decided to... stand on his head.
Behaviour of drivers in Warsaw southern ring road tunnel (POW tunnel) is being constantly watched by management system cameras. Poland's General Directorate for National Roads and Highways (GDDKiA) General Directorate for National Roads and Highways that the situation in the tunnel is monitored live by the Tunnel Management Centre (CZT), which works 24/7. The footage is also recorded by the CCTV.
"Each car which stops, and any pedestrian triggers the system alert. In specific situations, tunnel ventilation system is also launched," the GDDKiA said in a statement.
Dangerous situations already on the first night
One dangerous situation was recorded already on the first night after opening of the tunnel. A few people organised... a photo session with three cars. The GDDKiA also said that the following day, others had a chat at the emergency lane. And on Christmas, someone stopped their car right in front of the tunnel exit due to their child's toilet need.
To top it all, another group of drivers organised another photo session, but this time they blocked the entry to the tunnel at Wilanów end. "However, all reckless drivers and their passengers have been surpassed by the one who got off the car and tried to stand on his head at an expressway lane," we read in the statement.
The GDDKiA reminds that drivers should observe the road regulations, which state clearly that stopping vehicles in the tunnel is prohibited. "We will be sending videos and images documenting law violations to the police. Driver, please watch the film and think about potential consequences of such behaviour. It creates danger for road users and for You too!!!" - Poland's central road administration cautioned.
