"The plan is to play at the weekend". Lewandowski confirms he's back
Robert Lewandowski is getting closer to returning to the pitch. "The plan is for me to play again at the weekend," Polish powerful striker said in an interview for Bayern Munich official website. He also commented on Gerd Müller’s historic goal record he still has a chance to break.
Robert Lewandowski’s recovery after a knee injury he suffered in Poland's World Cup qualifier against Andorra is nearly complete. The prediction that the process would last about four weeks turned out to be true, and the player is very likely to play in the last four fixtures Bayern has in this Bundesliga season.
"I’m doing very well. I’ve been training a few days now and everything’s going as planned. That means I’m happy and the plan is for me to play again at the weekend," Lewandowski told fcbayern.com.
The striker needed to rest for two weeks before starting running after sustaining the injury. Since last week, he has been gradually increasing his workload and progressed to training with the ball.
"Lewandowski is making an excellent impression, but the Leverkusen game may come too soon. We hope he’ll be involved on Saturday," Bayern coach Hansi Flick said before game against Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday.
Poland skipper's successful recovery means he will have a chance to break Gerd Müller's goalscoring record from the 1971/72 season, when he scored 40 times. This season Lewandowski has been delivering top-shelf performances for Bayern scoring 35 goals so far. It seems that it's only up to Hansi Flick whether he will pick his top man to play on Saturday against Mainz.
"Lewy" was asked by fcbayern.com about his shot at the record and he replied in a humble and practical fashion typical for him.
"I don’t know whether I can do that, but I hope when I’m back out there that I can show my level from the first minute and score goals straightaway," Lewandowski said.
A win against Mainz will secure the championship for the Bavarian side. As to Lewandowski's challenge, he needs 5 goals in 4 games to equal Müller's record, and anything above will set a new one.
