Newly elected MEP Andrzej Halicki was chosen on Friday as the head of Civic Platform - Polish People's Party (PO-PSL) delegation to the European Parliament. The 22 MEPs will join the whole European People's Party which is to choose its leadership soon. The current leader, Manfred Weber, is likely to remain at the helm of the party.
The meeting of the newly chosen MEPs from Civic Platform took place on Friday in Warsaw. The 22 politicians who will soon move to Brussels have been given official certificates of election.
"We have made the first two decisions - we've selected the head of the delegation and the treasurer," said Andrzej Halicki, the new leader of PO-PSL delegation - a member of European People's Party. "To me it means that next week I'm going to discuss the status of Polish delegation and its representatives in all the key EU institutions," he added.
Jarosław Duda has been made the treasurer. In line with long-existing agreement between PO and PSL, the latter party is to select a co-leader of the Polish delegation from within its ranks.
Halicki pointed to the fact that the election result achieved by the European Coalition allowed PO-PSL to become the second-largest after Germany, national delegation to the European Parliament. "On one hand, we have excellent and experienced MEPs with good reputation, and on the other, people who can share their Polish experience," said the PO MEP.
Andrzej Halicki is a long-time associate of the Civic Platform's Chairman Grzegorz Schetyna. During the previous term of the European Parliament, Janusz Lewandowski headed the Polish delegation to the EPP.
