A team of Polish prosecutors and forensic experts have finished on Monday the first day of examining the wreckage of presidential Tu-154M in Smolensk, Russia. The car carrying the team members left the Smolensk North Airport before 6 pm Polish time.
No details regarding the scope and time frame of the workshave been revealed; according to unofficial information, the Polish experts are expected to be in Smolensk until the end of the week.
Unlike during the previous visit by the Polish team in September 2018, the Russian investigative committee did not give any statement for the press in Smolensk. Russian and Polish investigators only said last week that the experts were to examine structure elements and power generators of the plane. The wreckage has been kept in a hangar at the military airport in Smolensk; two blue tents have been set up before the hangar. In September last year, the experts examining the wreckage have undergone check-ups and worn special protective suits, which according to Russian media, were necessary in order to avoid cross-contamination.
Police and military were scattered around the roads leading to the airport. They did not allow the journalists to film the entrance to the facility and advised them to move further away "from the territory of the defense ministry". The view of the airport gates has been blocked by a truck with no license plates parked across the road.
