Sports Minister Sławomir Nitras stated on Tuesday (November 12) that the bronze medal won by Poland's women’s amputee football team at the Women’s Amputee Football World Cup was a significant achievement. He praised the rapid development of Polish women’s football and reassured that the it could count on support from the ministry.
The Polish women’s amputee football team won the bronze medal at the first Women’s Amputee Football World Cup, defeating Kenya 1-0 in the third-place match. The competition was held in Barranquilla, Colombia.
Monika Kukla scored the only goal of the bronze-medal match, taking her scoring tally up to 4 goals.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Sports Minister Sławomir Nitras highlighted the team’s success as a major achievement and announced that he has invited the players to a meeting, which is expected to take place later this week. He expressed his joy, saying it would be a great honor and pleasure to host them.
Nitras also stressed that integrating people with disabilities into physical education is a responsibility of the state. He noted the inconsistency in this area, with some schools offering specialized courses and activities for people with disabilities, while others do not, emphasizing that sport should be accessible to everyone.
The minister pointed out that the success of the amputee football team reflects a broader trend. He mentioned that the senior women’s national team is ranked similarly to the men’s team in the global rankings and highlighted the success of the U-17 women’s team, which recently reached the quarterfinals of the World Cup in the Dominican Republic.
This year, the sports ministry launched a separate program, for the first time specifically for women’s football. Previously, this area of sports was "lumped together with the men’s," which, he added, hindered women’s development.
Nitras concluded by expressing his confidence in the ongoing growth of women’s football in Poland, both for non-disabled and disabled players. He predicted that in a few years, it would be as normal for girls to play football as it is for boys, and assured that this progress would have his full support.
