Polish world-famous cinematographer Witold Sobociński passed away on Monday at the age of 89.
Witold Sobociński has been the director of photography in such fine movies as Roman Polański's "Frantic", Andrzej Wajda's "The Promised Land" and "The Hourglass Sanatorium" by Wojciech Jerzy Has. The National Film School in Łódź, Sobociński's alma mater, has informed about the renowned cinematographer's passing.
"An outstanding film photographer, Our Teacher has passed away aged 89," Łódź Film School wrote on its website on Monday.
"One of the first graduates of the Cinematography Department. Member of the legendary jazz band, "Melomani". Since the eighties, our Teacher – professor at the Cinematography Department has been greatly respected by his students, educated generations of cinematographers and been one of the most important Lodz Film School professors in its whole history," reads the obituary.
Among the famous directors that Sobociński had worked with, Łódź Film School listed Jerzy Skolimowski, Andrzej Wajda, Wojciech Jerzy Has, Roman Polański, Piotr Szulkin, Krzysztof Zanussi and Andrzej Żuławski.
Sobociński was a three-time winner of the Camerimage Lifetime Achievement Award, awards from the American Association of Cinematographers, "Eagle" for lifetime achievements, "Platinum Lions" in Gdynia, Special Award of the Association of Cinematographers (PSC) and Polish Filmmakers Association Award for outstanding artistic achievements.
