"At the beginning of the uprising the generals would ask: 'what do we need so many women for?'. And when the uprising was ending, we received the same rights as boys. And we shall not give up these rights," the Warsaw Uprising veteran Wanda Traczyk-Stawska said during commemorations of the 79th anniversary of the insurgency. She also stressed that although the constitution guarantees equality to everyone, the Polish government "has forgotten that women have their status guaranteed in this constitution".
Wanda Traczyk-Stawska, a Warsaw Uprising veteran, spoke during commemorations of the 79th anniversary of the insurgency at Wola Cemetery. "We are a truly free country, as long as we understand we need a government capable of making sure democracy stays here forever," she said.
"Fear not. Remember we are a free nation and no one has the right to govern us so that we feel humiliated. I'm talking about women. We, the women, won something priceless in the uprising - the same rights as men," Traczyk-Stawska said.
The veteran also recalled that "at the beginning of the uprising the generals would ask: 'what do we need so many women for?'". "And when the uprising was ending, we received the same rights as boys. And we shall not give up these rights. We won't give them up. Because everyone, regardless if they are men or women, is a citizen of this country and has equality enshrined in the constitution," she added.
"Please, remember the constitution. So that each citizen knows the constitution, and knows it's about time to completely replace this government, which has forgotten that women have their status guaranteed in this constitution. That we are equal to men," Wanda Traczyk-Stawska.
