Warsaw's recently renovated Five Corners Square has now received a new artistic installation named "The Song Thrush Hatchling". The sculpture, designed by internationally acclaimed Polish artist Joanna Rajkowska, is exceptional for its acoustic qualities. If you put your ear close to shell, you will hear a hatching bird and the beating of its heart. The idea is to encourage passersby to stop for a while and promote sensitivity to other species.
The two-meter-wide egg was unveiled on Friday (May 12) at the Five Corners Square in central Warsaw. The installation was designed by renowned Polish artist Joanna Rajkowska.
"The Song Thrush Hatchling" is an acoustic installation. If you put your ear close to shell, you will hear the sounds of hatching bird and the beating of its heart. The egg vibrates as it works like a membrane which allows to listen to and feel the sound waves vibrations. But in order to experience it, you need to touch, put your ear to, or embrace the egg.
"It is a sort of a test for the people of Warsaw. My intention was to create a surreal object which puts us into a completely different spacetime, a bird spacetime to be precise. The project came to existence in 2018 at Michał Kempiński's atelier," Joanna Rajkowska said.
"Just like the palm tree, this sculpture might become one of Warsaw's touristic symbols. This hatchling and this mini pond next to it speak about sensitivity to non-human residents of Warsaw. Birds and dogs use this water. I encourage everyone to go ahead and come over to the egg and hug it, it makes an incredible impression," said Warsaw Deputy Mayor Aldona Machnowska-Góra.
"The Song Thrush Hatchling" is likely to enrich the conventional space of Warsaw, just like another famous installation by Joanna Rajkowska did many years ago - namely the palm tree located at the Charles de Gaulle Roundabout.
