According to Warsaw's Bureau of Security and Emergency Management estimates, around 90,000 people participated in this year's Independence Day March organized by nationalists - said Marzena Gawkowska, deputy spokesperson for the Warsaw City Hall.
The organizers themselves estimated before the march that approximately 100,000 people would take part.
The situation on the streets of Warsaw is very calm. So far, the march is proceeding without major incidents, Jarosław Misztal, director of the Bureau of Security and Emergency Management, informed after 3:00 p.m. on Monday.
He noted that while there had been some isolated instances of pyrotechnics being set off, there had been less of it compared to previous years.
The Warsaw Police said that all actions during the demonstration in the capital were aimed solely at ensuring safety.
During the Independence March, the police secured many pyrotechnic materials, as well as knives and expandable batons. The Warsaw Metropolitan Police assured that all actions during the demonstration in the capital were solely for the purpose of ensuring safety.
"So far, our officers have secured many pyrotechnic materials, the carrying and use of which are prohibited in Warsaw by decision of the Masovian Voivode. Among the items found during searches of some individuals are also knives, expandable batons, and brass knuckles," said Police spokesperson Robert Szumiata.
He added that the criticism appearing in some media, suggesting that police actions against participants in the gathering are improper, seemed at least misguided. In fact, the officers were carrying out effective measures to remove individuals who may pose a threat to public safety from public spaces.
"Among those brought to our units are people suspected of committing crimes (including possession of drugs), as well as minors in possession of pyrotechnic materials, who, according to current regulations, must be taken into custody by their legal guardians," Szumiata explained.
The police reported that by 2:00 PM, they had detained 75 people.
