Rainfall has caused sewage and rainwater volume increase in seven districts of the left-bank Warsaw. The excess is being released into the Vistula - the spokesman for the Polish Waters, Sergiusz Kieruzel, informed on Wednesday.
Kieruzel said that "due to Wednesday's rainfall, the volume of sewage and rainwater from seven disctricts of the left-bank Warsaw increased to 4.6 cubic metres per second". He also explained that "it exceeds the maximum capacity of the temporary pipeline, which is 3.5 cubic metres per second".
Furthermore, Kieruzal said that "at the moment, the excess of sewage and rainwater about 4 cubic metres per second" and "the excess is being released to the Vistula".
According to Polish Waters' spokesperson, "rainwaters will drain in a few hours and the situation should improve". He added that "the pumps are working around the clock and 3.5 cubic metres of sewage per second flows directly to "Czajka" waste treatment plant".
"We've reached 100-percent throughput of waste pumped to "Czajka" plant," - the deputy chief of the Ministry of Maritime and Inland Navigation, Anna Moskwa, said at a press conference on Saturday (September 14).
Moskwa thanked the workers involved in the construction of the pipeline and said: "We've promised and delivered".
The two tanks, collecting waste from left-bank Warsaw and sending them to "Czajka" waste treatment plant, broke down in late August. As a result, the sewage was being released directly into the Vistula. Due to the danger of ecological crisis, the government decided to build a temporary pipeline. The system reached full capacity on Saturday.
