Attempted murder, illegal possession of a firearm, breach of personal inviolability and criminal threats - these four charges were presented to the 22-year-old man who had been attacking people holding a gin in his hand on Sunday in central Warsaw - said Chief Commissioner Robert Szumiata from the inner city police department in Warsaw.
The incident took place on Sunday (September 15) in central Warsaw. "Around noon, we received information about a man walking around the inner city with a gun in hand," said Szumiata.
He added that "after the police arrived, a homeless man was lying on a sidewalk on Nowy Świat street".
"According to witnesses, the homeless man was sitting on a bench when the 22-year-old approached him, pointed a gun to his cheek and fired," Szumiata explained.
The officers tended to the homeless man and called an ambulance. "When it arrived, they went after the armed man," he added.
After a short chase, the officers found the 22-year-old. "Before he was detained, the man had tried to get rid of the cap pistol by throwing it the bushes," said the policemen. After incapacitating the man, the officers found the gun and secured it. "The secured cap pistol, according to the law, is treated as regular firearm," Szumiata added.
The spokesman for the inner city police revealed that "the man had 0.15 percent alcohol content detected in his breath".
Witnesses and four victims have been questioned. According to the police, the 22-year-old "pushed one (of the victims) over and kicked him all over the body, punched the second in the chest, and pointed the gun at others".
The man has been charged with attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm, breach of personal inviolability and criminal threats. By court's decision, he's been temporarily detained for the period of three months.
The detained 22-year-old may be facing from 8 years to life in prison.
