The southern Polish village of Laliki in the Beskidy mountains had to call in heavy machinery on Monday to dig itself out of deep snow that fell during last week. Local officials described roads as looking like bobsleigh tracks and that because of the chilly air the snowy had hardened, resembling "frozen concrete". One resident said locals were waiting to be dug out or were trying to dig their way through the white stuff with shovels. The entrance to her house had been entirely blocked by snow, she said. Polish broadcaster TVN said access to the village and the surrounding area was only possible with a four-wheel drive vehicle.
