Two U.S. military planes landed in Poland on Monday (February 7) and more were expected later in the day, bringing the bulk of the extra troops that President Joe Biden ordered to Europe last week over the Ukraine crisis.
A Polish military spokesperson said more planes were expected on Monday, but did not say how many.
Biden has ordered nearly 3,000 troops to move to eastern Europe to protect the eastern flank of NATO from the possibility of a Russian attack on Ukraine.
Russia, which has deployed more than 100,000 troops near the Ukrainian frontier, denies Western accusations that it is planning an invasion.
On Saturday (February 5) a small plane carrying the commanding general of the 82nd Airborne Division, U.S. Army Major General Christopher Donahue, among others landed at Rzeszów-Jasionka airport following a few planes with U.S. military equipment and an "advance group".
The Pentagon said that around 1,700 service members, mainly from the 82nd Airborne Division, would deploy from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, to Poland.
Russia has denied plans to invade Ukraine but has deployed more than 100,000 troops near Ukraine's borders and says it could take unspecified military measures if its demands are not met, including a promise by NATO never to admit Kyiv.
