The United States looks forward to working with Poland's next government after Sunday's election, White House National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said in a post on X on Tuesday (Oct. 17). Election results from Poland showed the ruling nationalists losing their parliamentary majority to a liberal pro-EU party and its allies. The previous day, U.S. Ambassador to Poland Mark Brzezinski had said the record voter turnout "is a strong manifestation of the importance the Polish people attach to freedom and democracy".
"We congratulate the people of Poland on their record turnout in Sunday’s elections, which is a strong reflection of democratic will," White House National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said on the X social media platform.
"We look forward to working with Poland’s next government to continue strengthening the close ties between our nations," she added.
This has been the first White House's comment on Poland's parliamentary election that took place on Sunday, October 15.
U.S. Ambassador: record turnout shows how Poles value freedom and democracy.
The previous day, on Monday, Oct. 16, U.S. Ambassador to Poland Mark Brzezinski commented on the Polish elections.
"A huge power of civic involvement, demonstrated by the Poles yesterday, is truly inspiring," the ambassador wrote on X.
"The record voter turnout in Poland is a strong manifestation of the importance the Polish people attach to freedom and democracy, which the previous generations of this great nation had fought for so strongly throughout history," Brzezinski added.
Final election results
The National Electoral Commission announced on Tuesday (Oct. 17) the final results of the 2023 parliamentary election:
Law and Justice - 35.38 percent (7,640,854 votes),
Civic Coalition – 30.70 percent (6,629,402 votes),
Third Way – 14.40 percent (3,110,670 votes),
New Left – 8.61 percent (1,859,018),
Confederation – 7.16 percent (1,547,364).
The above data will translate into the following distribution of seats in the Sejm:
Law and Justice - 194 seats,
Civic Coalition - 157 seats,
Third Way - 65 seats,
New Left - 26 seats,
Confederation - 18 seats.
It means that the democratic opposition groupings can win a combined majority of 248 seats.
The voter turnout of 74.38% was the highest since the collapse of communism in Poland.
