U.S. Ambassador to Poland Mark Brzezinski on Monday (Dec. 4) met with Szymon Hołownia, the speaker of the Sejm, the lower house of the Polish parliament. Hołownia assured the ambassador ahead of the talks that members of the Brzezinski family were always very welcome in the Sejm. The discussion pertained, among other things, to U.S.-Polish relations and the position of the likely new ruling coalition with regards to relations with the EU.
The U.S. ambassador arrived in the Sejm around 1:30 p.m. Before the talks commenced, Hołownia and Brzezinski exchanged handshakes in front of cameras.
"Henry Kissinger once said: 'if it's not on television, it didn't happen'. Today, if it's not on Instagram, it didn't happen. And I want this to be," Brzezinski said.
"Thanks for the invitation, it's a huge honor for me. Poland's voice matters, Washington can hear it. Congratulations," the ambassador said in Polish this time.
Hołownia assured that the Brzezinski family were always very welcome in the Sejm.
The Sejm said on its official profile on the X social media platform that the head of the parliamentary commission on EU affairs Michał Kobosko, a Third Way MP, also took part in the meeting.
"We've very specifically discussed Polish-American relations. Mr Ambassador was very interested in the new coalition's position regarding Poland as part of the European Union, but also our German neighbor and Ukraine. In relation to the strong support and presence of U.S. troops in the region, we've also discussed security," Kobosko told PAP after the meeting.
He stressed that the multi-sector cooperation with the USA was critically important for Poland. "The U.S. is closely monitoring how the relations between states within the EU look like. Mr Ambassador stated clearly that, from the American point of view, the situation that needs to be pursued is harmonious cooperation within the EU, including Poland's active posture with the EU as well as avoiding creating new conflicts in the EU's internal relations. This is very important for the Americans," the MP said, adding that Hołownia together with the whole Poland 2050 party shared this opinion.
"Apart from that we've discussed issues related with energy. Ahead of us are very important decisions regarding the development of Poland's nuclear energy sector and the first American investment that will begin very soon. The whole Poland 2050, including Mr Speaker (Hołownia), consider the switch of the Polish energy mix towards renewable energy sources very important and we shall head in that direction," Kobosko underscored.
The MP also mentioned that Poland was lagging behind in that regard. "This has to be approached responsibly. We will be developing this sector because we are in a situation at risk of electric energy, electricity sources, and heating deficits. That is why the government will treat this matter with priority."
Kobosko said that parliamentary cooperation between Poland and the USA was also among the topics of discussion. "Mr Ambassador informed that many members of the American Congress would like meet Mr Speaker (Hołownia), they want to visit Poland. Mr Speaker assured they would always be very welcome in the Polish Sejm. Parliamentary cooperation between the Polish Sejm and the U.S. Congress will be very active," he said.
He stressed that the discussion with the U.S. ambassador was held in a friendly manner. "We spoke like friends do, which is obvious as Poland and the USA are partners and that won't change under the new coalition rule," the MP assured.
