The European Union and Poland will need to tackle tough topics such as migration and the rule of law, incoming EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Thursday (July 25).
Speaking alongside Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki on her first visit to Warsaw as the head of the commission, von der Leyen said it was crucial both sides showed respect and listened to one another.
With Polish support, the German politician and former minister of defence was picked by EU national leaders to head the EU executive last week.
In presenting her programme for the next five years, von der Leyen stressed that respecting fundamental EU values would be at the heart of her policies.
Poland has been subject to an unprecedented EU rule-of-law procedure since late 2017 over reforms that Brussels has said undermine judicial independence.
Poland's PM Mateusz Morawiecki said after the meeting that "the whole conversation with von der Leyen was about the future, a positive future for the EU and for Poland as one of the key EU member-states".
He added that the talks pertained to issues connected with economy, migration, trade, social policy and the society. "All issues that we've discussed were fully in line with the our policy adopted here in Poland," said the head of Polish government.
