Georgian national Mamuka K., suspected of murdering a Polish woman Paulina D. in the city of Łódź last year, will be handed over to the Polish authorities," informed the prosecutor's office in Kiev, Ukraine. Earlier on, the court of appeals overruled the decision by a lower court that had blocked the man's extradition.
"On June 3, the Kiev Court of Appeals approved of the complaint filed against a ruling by the local court (on suspending the procedure of extraditing Mamuka K. to Poland). At the moment, extradition procedure is pending," informed the Kiev prosecutor's office on Monday on Facebook.
"The decision to extradite Mamuka K. to Poland was issued by Ukranian Prosecutor General, on request filed by Polish side. The decision was appealed against by the attorney for the Georgian, suspected of murdering a 28-year-old Polish woman in October 2018 in Łódź. "One of the Kiev's local courts overruled the prosecutors decision that was appealed against," said the spokesperson for the National Public Prosecutor's Office, Ewa Bialik, on the 8th of May. The 39-year-old Georgian national, suspected of murdering the woman in a sexual assault, was detained in early November in a street in Kiev. The International Arrest Warrant after Mamuka K. was issued on the 28th of October 2018. He is facing life imprisonment.
In November 2018, the Deputy Justice Minister Łukasz Piebiak sent an official extradition request to the Ukrainian Prosecutor's General. The suspect was arrested by the Ukrainian court in November.
"In line with the extradition agreement, the suspect was arrested for 40 days. His extradition procedure is currently pending. If the court approves of the request, the man will be transported to Poland and immediately arrested and charged after passing the border," said Krzysztof Kopania, the spokesperson for the District Prosecutor's Office in Łódź.
The woman was reported missing on the 20th October 2018. Paulina D. left home on Friday to meet with her friends. She was last seen in the company of an unknown man in a street in Łódź, which was caught by the CCTV. The investigators determined so far that the 28-year-old was killed in a flat on Żeromskiego street in Łódź.
Based on the secured traces and other evidence it was determined that the murder took place before noon on October 20 and then, about 6 pm, wrapped in plastic, placed in a bag and transported to a grove nearby Stawy Jana park. The body was discovered a week later, on Friday, October 26.
The post mortem showed initially that the death was caused by puncture wounds on the victim's neck. Furthermore, some wounds indicated that the woman could have also been beaten.
