Presidents of Poland and Ukraine Andrzej Duda and Volodymyr Zelenskiy resumed talks on Friday in Poland's southern town of Wisła. The two leaders discussed challenges to the region's security, lifting barriers in international transport, as well as advancing energy ties.
Presidents of Poland and Ukraine on Thursday arrived in Wisła where they commenced two-day consultations. The main topic of discussion was security in the region and the threat of Russia's aggression against Ukraine. Friday's talks between the two leaders ended before noon. According to a TVN24 reporter, president Zelenskiy left Wisła around 10 a.m.
"Grateful to Polish people & Andrzej Duda for consistently supporting Ukraine’s territorial integrity, sovereignty & Euro-Atlantic integration. Such support is especially important in these hard times. Glad that we are working together to confront the security challenges in the region," Ukraine's president said in a tweet on Friday.
Chief of Polish president's International Policy Bureau Jakub Kumoch informed on Twitter that talks between presidents Duda and Zelenskiy had come to an end. "In the face of danger, Ukraine can count on Poland's support," he stressed, adding that there would be further talks between presidential representatives.
Kumoch: Poland supports Ukraine, says no to Russian aggression
"Poland supports Ukraine, and states clearly that there will be no consent to Russia's politics of aggression," Jakub Kumoch said on Friday in Wisła.
Ukrainian president on Thursday informed on Twitter about the course of discussion with his Polish counterpart. "Productive talks with my friend Andrzej Duda are underway. Discussed security challenges, lifting obstacles in the transport sphere, enhancing energy interaction. Agreed on a further schedule of meetings," Zelenskiy wrote.
Chief of Poland's National Security Bureau (BBN) Paweł Soloch on Thursday evening told public television channel TVP Info that the two president would also discuss options of material support for Ukraine, rather than only political. He added that president Duda had discussed this issue beforehand with the Polish goverment ministers of defence, foreign affairs, and home affairs.
Russian army at the border with Ukraine
Talks between Duda and Zelesnkiy were held in the time of Russia's increased threat issued against Ukraine and the West. Russia demands legal guarantees that NATO would not expand, especially by allowing Ukraine to join the alliance. Furthermore, Russia wants NATO to remove its infrastructure back to the borders from 1997. In case those demands are not met, Russia announced taking steps, including military action, however it did not specify exactly what kind of action.
Ukraine and the western coutries argue that amassing of more than 100,000 Russian troops at the border with Ukraine is meant to pressure Kiev and coutries supporting it. Military experts and western governments underscore the real threat of Russian aggression.
