Last week, Intel announced its intention to conduct collective layoffs to the Gdańsk Labor Office. In a statement sent to the business editorial team at tvn24.pl, the technology giant stated that "these changes are aimed at building a simpler, better-aligned, and optimized organization."
In the case of intending to carry out collective layoffs, the company must report such a plan to the appropriate district labor office. According to the trojmiasto.pl portal, such a notification from Intel has been received by the Gdańsk Labor Office.
The information was confirmed to PAP by Krzysztof Kunicki, the head of the Marketing and Employer Cooperation Department at the Gdańsk Labor Office.
We reached out to Intel for a comment on this matter. "As part of the comprehensive cost-saving plan announced in August, we are making difficult but necessary decisions regarding workforce reduction, treating our personnel with care and respect. These are the toughest decisions we have ever faced. These changes are aimed at building a simpler, better-aligned, and optimized organization and are part of Intel's long-term sustainable growth strategy," Intel stated in a statement sent to the business editorial team at tvn24.pl.
The company did not respond to our questions regarding the scale of the layoffs.
International troubles for the giant
Just a few months ago, Intel announced the construction of semiconductor factories in Germany and Poland. However, the company quickly decided to suspend the project, at least until 2026. Additionally, in August, Intel reported plans to achieve $10 billion in savings by 2025, partly by laying off about 15,000 people. However, until now, no information has emerged suggesting that this would affect Poland.
According to trojmiasto.pl, Intel’s center in Gdańsk is the second largest of its kind in the world, after the one located in the USA. "It was supposed to closely collaborate with the microchip factory in Wrocław," the portal reports.
Intel, headquartered in Santa Clara in California's Silicon Valley, is a technology company founded in 1968 and is one of the largest semiconductor manufacturers in the world. The American company, listed on the NASDAQ, produces, among other things, processors for personal computers as well as IT and hardware solutions for data centers, artificial intelligence, and autonomous vehicles. Globally, the company employs over 121,000 people, including about 10,000 employees in the European Union.
