A tram driver from Żoliborz depot heard a radio message about a missing boy who was interested in trams. While driving the vehicle he spotted the child who matched the description. He decided to help.
The situation took place a few ago, but Warsaw Trams have issued a statement just now. On July 25, Damian Miałkowski was driving a line number 1 tram. As we read in a statement posted by Warsaw Trams on Facebook, he heard a message about a missing boy. The police said in the description the boy liked trams, and that he was likely to be found near them.
Invitation to driver's cabin
The driver reacted immediately. "He started looking for the child, and luckily it worked! A boy matching the description was waiting at a stop at Gdański Bridge. As soon as the boy entered and took a seat, our colleague called 112, in order to send the good news over to the police and pick a convenient spot where they could pick him," the statement reads.
The police, however, weren't coming. The driver worried the patrol wouldn't make it on time as the boy was getting ready to exit. That's why he stopped the tram, but left the door closed. "He left the cabin to talk to the boy, who admitted he wandered off home and got lost. In that moment, Damian recalled the boy was interested in trams, so, in order to calm him down a little, he invited him to inspect the driver's cabin. When the police arrived, the boy was already in a much better mood and could safely return home," we read in a statement.
Warsaw Trams learned about their employee's resolve from a commendation letter written by one of the passengers. The driver has been awarded.
