On Friday, there was a tragic accident on the road between Wschowa and Radomyśl in Greater Poland. At about 9:30 p.m. a Land Rover hit two teenage girls riding their bikes home. One of the girls died at the scene and the other was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition.
It was supposed to be a calm, summer night on vacation. The teenagers were riding their bikes. They had 1.5 kilometres from home, when one of them was hit by a Land Rover going in the same direction. The accident happened on a long, straight stretch of road.
"The 13-year-old died at the scene. The 14-year-old was taken to the hospital in Leszno," said Monika Żymełka from Leszno police.
From there, after her wounds were bandaged, she was transported to the pediatric surgical ward in Gostyń. Her life is not in danger. For now, it is not known whether the driver himself called the police and ambulance to the scene of the accident.
"The driver was traveling by himself. At this moment we do not know whether he called the police and ambulance service, but we have a phone number from which we were notified," said Officer Żymełka.
She added: "unfortunately, I do not know who initiated the conversation and who notified the police about the incident".
But we do know that the driver was sober and that there were a few witnesses who saw the man hit the teenagers with his car. All have given their statements to the police. Residents of Radomyśl blame the accident on the lack of bike paths in the area and the need to renovate the road.
"There should be bike paths, shouldn't there? And there are none. Most likely, the road will be resurfaced but there are no plans for a bike path," said Halina Wieląd, Resident of Radomyśl. Another resident of Radomyśl, Bogdan Firlej said: "they should make a bike path. That poor girl died. Whose fault is it? For sure not hers. I went there to see the scene today. There are no skid marks. Did you see that? There are no skid marks. He dragged her for 12 meters, along these lines".
Police under the supervision of the prosecutor are also trying to determine, whether the teenage girls had reflectors.
"We are checking if the girls had any type of reflectors. We know that the accident occurred around 9:30 p.m. It was already after dusk, but visibility at that location was very good. However, with regard to the regulations, it is required by law for pedestrians to have some kind of reflective element when moving outside a so-called built-up area after dusk. But in the case of cyclists it is not required by law," said Officer Monika Żymełka from Leszno police.
The 37-year-old driver of the car was interviewed on Saturday. For now, as a witness to the accident. On the night of the acccident, he was unable to give a statement due to psychological trauma.
