Greta Thunberg, a Swedish 15-year-old who has inspired a global movement of children skipping school to call for action on climate change, said on Monday that more action was needed rather than hope in order to make an impact.

The fifteen-year-old began her five day a week protest outside Stockholm's parliament in the weeks before Sweden's election on September 9. Since then, she has returned to school for four days a week whilst continuing to protest on Fridays.

Thunberg, speaking at a news conference during the COP24 Climate Change Conference in Katowice, Poland, said that she was inspired by students who survived a school shooting in the U.S. who went on strike demanding stronger gun legislation.

She also met U.N. chief Antonio Guterres, telling him world leaders had ignored "countless people" standing up at U.N. climate summits for 25 years urging them to curb planet-warming emissions.

Thunberg said young people should use all means at their disposal - whether social media, or direct protests such as school strikes - to raise awareness about the "mess" created by older people.
