Most likely, a gas leak caused an explosion in a tenement building in Kędzierzyn-Koźle (Lower Silesian Voivodeship). After a thorough search
Leszek Morkis from Kędzierzyn-Koźle Fire Service, said on Thursday that there may be two people still underneath the rubble. Thankfully, after a thorough search it turned out that no one was found.
In total, one seriously injured person was taken to a hospital and two others were evacuated from the building on Thursday.
The explosion took place about 7 pm in an old tenement building in Kędzierzyn-Koźle. Several units of rescuers from fire service arrived at the scene at the time. More units were dispatched later on and so the number of firefighters working reached 80.
Shortly after the incident, duty officer from State Fire Service in Opole said that if was yet unknown whether a gas container or gas installation caused the explosion. A fire broke out. One storey of the building collapsed. Other storeys were unstable.
Surrounding buildings have been evacuated as there is a risk of collapsing.
One of the witnesses said that he had managed to get to the second floor of the building. "There was an elderly lady inside and so I helped her to get out. I went inside again to check if there were any other people but one of the flats was so damaged that I couldn't go through," the man said.
