Prosecutor denies request to transfer Stefan W. to a hospital ward
The prosecutor has rejected a request by the attorney of Stefan W., accused of murdering the mayor of Gdańsk Paweł Adamowicz, to transfer his client to a hospital ward - the spokesperson for the District Prosecutor's Office in Gdańsk, Grażyna Wawryniuk, confirmed on Thursday.
Stefan W. is being held in a detention centre in Gdańsk. The information regarding the rejection of the transfer request was first reported by rmf24.pl portal.
"The attorney filed a request to reconsidering changing the form of temporary arrest of the defendant. The prosecutor took necessary measures to consider the request, and concluded that there were no premises justifying such move," prosecutor Wawryniuk said.
In the second half of October, the District Prosecutor's Office in Gdańsk received a forensic-psychiatric opinion regarding Stefan W.'s mental condition.
"At the moment, in line with the regulations, the prosecutor is analysing the opinion as to its completeness and comprehensiveness. The initial analysis of the opinion already suggests an amendment will be necessary. According to the prosecutor, expert witnesses have not addressed all issues crucial for assessing sanity of the defendant in the moment of committing the crime he is charged of," the prosecutor's office informed at the time.
"Steps are being taken to amend this opinion," Wawryniuk said.
On the 13th of January in Gdańsk, during the finale of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, the 27-year-old Stefan W. rushed onto the stage and stabbed Mayor Paweł Adamowicz with a knife.
The mayor was taken to hospital where he underwent a 5-hour-long operation. He died the next day. The post-mortem revealed, among other findings, three deep stab wounds - one close to the heart and two in the stomach.
