Two trucks carrying Soviet T-72 tanks were pulled over in central Poland on Tuesday (December 3) for violating transportation laws.
The trucks with their oversized cargo were stopped after inspectors discovered they were overloaded by more than 20 tonnes each and the drivers did not carry proper permits.
The trucks were also found to have exceeded the limit for width and length.
"The drivers showed permits, but our colleagues questioned the presented permits. They went on the scale with these tanks transported on tow trucks and it turned out that the permits presented for inspection did not authorise this transport because the actual total weight was over 60 tonnes in both cases. One weighed 73.6 tons and the other tank weighed 61.1 tons and these permits were inadequate for this transport yesterday," said Szymon Sidor, the spokesperson of Łódź Voivodeship Road Transport Inspectorate.
The owners of the trucks were fined 50,000 zlotys (12,500 euros).
The privately-owned tanks were being driven to the southern Polish town of Gliwice for repair.
