Six people have been lightly injured in a collision of two tram cars in Katowice. According to the police, driver of one of the trams most likely fainted and the vehicle smashed into another one which was already at the stop.
The accident took place next to Galeria Katowicka. The police said that for the time being it has been classified as a collision because no one was seriously injured, but the final decision will depend on the full medical examination.
"Line 19 tram stopped at a station. Moments after line 7 approached from behind and smashed into number 19, the force of the impact pushed the tram some two metres forward," said Agnieszka Żyłka from Katowice Police. "According to initial assessment, number 7 driver could have fainted causing the accident," she added.
Fire service, police, and paramedics arrived at the scene. The police informed that tram number 7 driver and two passnegers were taken to a hospital.
Silesian Trams company spokesman Andrzej Zowada told Polish Press Agency that two other passengers received medical assistance on the spot. "One passenger walked away but felt unwell and went to a hospital on his own. In total we have six injured people," he said. Both drivers were not under the influence of alcohol, blood samples were taken from them for further analysis to rule out influence of other substances. Shortly after 1 pm, tram traffic went back to normal.
