World leaders met for the opening day of the 2023 SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) summit on Monday (September 18) at the United Nations. The President of Poland Andrzej Duda's speech at the summit pertained to the topic of resilience. He pointed to several accomplishments made by Poland in facilitating resilience, including assistance to Ukrainian refugees fleeing Russian aggression, investments in the diversification of energy supplies, and the digitalization of healthcare.
Poland’s President Andrzej Duda's speech at the U.N. 2023 SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) summit focused of the theme of "building resilience".
"In my view, resilience should even be voted as the word of the year," he said. "In times of crisis, investing in social resilience and social safety nets is particularly important to ensure that no one is left behind."
"In Poland, our priority is to provide support especially to persons in vulnerable situations, as well as families, children, and older persons. Poland’s solidarity and social resilience was best manifested by the remarkable assistance to Ukrainian refugees fleeing the Russian aggression," the president said.
Duda also said that "resilience of Poland is also embodied by transitions and adaption". "The war in Europe exposed among many other challenges the necessity for enhanced and trust-based collaboration in the energy sector. Our answer to this has been investing in diversification of energy supplies and promoting just transition."
The Polish president also stressed "that infrastructure connections remain the backbone of socio-economic progress everywhere". "Earlier this year, Poland tabled the U.N. General Assembly resolution on the topic of building global resilience and promoting sustainable development through regional and interregional infrastructure connectivity," he explained.
"Finally, in modern times, resilience is not possible without technological progress. Digitalization of healthcare in Poland serves as one example of how new technologies can be used to positive effect."
Andrzej Duda also underscored that Poland would "spare no efforts to reduce the rates of poverty nationwide, including poverty in families, especially those with many children". "Poland will also continue to strengthen policy coherence, governance, and institutional capacity for sustainable development."
"Furthermore, we will continue to advance a fair and just energy transition, including by the development of renewable energy sources and nuclear energy. It is my belief that our discussions today will revive our collective determination to preserve development gains and the prospects for global progress," president Duda added.
