Sea of candles in the shape of a giant heart lit up a memorial in Gdansk on Wednesday honouring the city's mayor who died after being stabbed at a charity event.
Thousands of people gathered outside the gates of the iconic Gdansk shipyard, the birthplace of anti-communist Solidarity movement, to pay tribute to Pawel Adamowicz, the city's mayor for the past 20 years.

A critic of anti-immigrant policies, and a supporter of a protest campaign to defend the rule of law in Poland he espoused liberal causes at odds with the conservative nationalist government.
Adamowicz, one of Poland's longest-serving mayors, stood out for his social initiatives, advocated tolerance and LGBT rights.
One of Poland's longest-serving mayors, Adamowicz was popular among Gdansk residents frequently campaigning alongside them and raising funds for charitable causes in the streets of Gdansk.
In the 2018 regional election, he won 65 percent of the vote.
