Completely reckless behaviour at the Giewont peak in the Tatra Mountains. A video sent to us via Kontakt24 platform, shows a tourist who climbed on the top of the huge metal cross. "I will never go there again, precisely because of people behaving this way," says the author of the recording.
The video shot at Giewont was sent to us via Kontakt24 platform. It shows a tourist who climbed to the top of the metal cross. "My friend told to look up because a man had climb up the cross located at the summit," said Marcin, the author of the video.
"I will never go there again, precisely because of people behaving this way," he added.
"Reckless behaviour"
Tatra National Park authorities have been already notified about the tourist's extremely dangerous behaviour. "First of all, it's a reckless behaviour, as climbing on such metal structure without belaying may result in a fall, also a deadly one. But it may also be dangerous to people standing next to the cross," Jan Krzeptowski-Sabała from Tatra National Park said.
However, he also said that the list of rules the tourist had violated was longer. "It's also a lack of respect. In the national park, we protect nature, as well as culture. We have various heritage sites here: huts, shrines and that cross, which is a tour destination for many religious people," Krzeptowski-Sabała said.
He also called upon other other tourists to chastise this kind of behaviour. "On days like this we have 30-40 thousand tourists on the trails, we can't be everywhere," he stressed.
The Tatras are protected by law by the establishment of the Tatra National Park, Slovakia and the Tatra National Park, Poland, which are jointly entered in UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
