Maturity is when you know that you can properly focus on only one task - the Mayor of Warsaw Rafał Trzaskowski said in TVN24's "Fakty po Faktach", explaining his decision not to run in the presidential election in 2020. "If I decided to run and succeeded, then my beloved city would have been run by a commissioner from PiS, and I couldn't let that to happen," he added.
According to recent poll for "Fakty" TVN and TVN24, Civic Platform's Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska would be Andrzej Duda's toughest opponent in presidential election in 2020. Rafał Trzaskowski was right behind Kidawa-Błońska in the poll, enjoying higher voter support than Wiosna party leader Robert Biedroń.
However, Trzaskowski himself said in TVN24 that he wasn't planning to run in the upcoming election.
"For many, many months I've been focused on Warsaw, and therefore, I won't be looking to become the opposition's candidate in this election. Maturity is when you know that you can properly focus on only one task," he said.
He explained that "it would be very hard to run a campaign for six months, at the same being the mayor of the capital city". To a remark that there had been cases when Warsaw mayors became Poland's presidents, Trzaskowski replied that "today's reality is completely different". "We must win this election, and there are a few people in the opposition who stand a chance to do it," he added.
If I decided to run and succeeded, then my beloved city would have been run by a commissioner from PiS, and I couldn't let that to happen," he added.
He also said that he has already "entered into a certain agreement with the Varsovians".
"A year ago I was elected mayor of Warsaw, I want to deliver my promises, I consider this a huge challenge, which gives me lots of energy and satisfaction, and I intend to face this challenge until completion," Rafał Trzaskowski said in TVN24.
