The man detained by the police in relation to the death of a 27-year-old Polish woman at the Greek island of Kos has been contadicting himself during questioning, according to Proto Thema - a local news portal that has been following the case. The man is a Bangladeshi national. His attorney said on Monday his client was not informed at the time that the woman's body had been found, adding the Bangladeshi was charged with abduction. The Ethnos portal, quoting a police source, said the woman had been strangled.
The Bangladeshi man is believed to be the last person the 27-year-old woman saw before her disappearance. According to Proto Thema, the man was "contradicting himself" during questioning. At first he was to say the Polish woman had had a voluntary sexual intercourse with him, but later denied such thing ever happened. Furthermore, the portal quoted a source from the inquiry saying the suspect had later claimed the women had wanted to buy drugs from him.
Proto Thema also reported the Polish woman's DNA and hair had been found in the suspect's room. A CCTV footage confirmed the woman had indeed been present in the suspect's home. Moreover, the man had scratch marks on his face and hands, and signs of struggle on hands only.
Earlier on, the man also claimed he had not seen the Polish woman at all on the day of her disappearance.
Poland's Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said he was "shocked with the death of the 27-year-old Anastazja". "The perpetrator must suffer very severe consequences. That is why we will ask Greece to hand over the suspect, so that he faces a Polish court and receives the highest punishment possible," he added.
The portal added that, according to unofficial information, the 27-year-old could have been strangled as hand prints had been found on her neck.
The Ethnos portal reported similar news. "Her death was caused by strangulation and everything she experienced in the last minutes of her life will be revealed in the autopsy findings," according to a police source quoted in the article. The death by strangulation was to be confirmed also by a forensic pathologist.
Ethnos also said the arrested man had booked a flight to Italy after the 27-year-old woman had gone missing, adding the police claimed the suspect had planned to flee abroad.
The main suspect's roommate is also under police observation. The 32-year-old Pakistani man is believed to have tried to help his friend to hide.
It was announced that autopsy would be carried out soon.
The suspect's attorney said on Monday his client was suspected of abduction, not rape and murder. The lawyer added the Bangladeshi was not, at the time, informed the woman's body had been found, which is a prerogative of the investigator leading the case - said Proto Thema.
Greek media informed on Sunday the body of the 27-year-old Polish woman had been found. The woman went missing on Monday (June 12) at the Greek island of Kos, where she was working at a hotel together with her partner.
The body was found around 7 p.m. local time, approximately 1 kilometer from the home of the arrested 32-year-old Bangladeshi, and some 500 meters from the place where the Polish woman's cellphone had been found on Saturday. According to local media, the body was found naked inside a plastic bag covered with branches.
The District Prosecutor's Office in Wrocław has launched an investigation into the death of the 27-year-old woman.
