Polish President Andrzej Duda said at the Warsaw Rising Museum on Sunday that the Warsaw Uprising was a fight for freedom and a longing for a free motherland.
"You fought for values, you didn't fight for revenge; the message of the Warsaw Uprising was a fight for freedom, a longing for a free motherland and for freedom as such," the president stated, addressing veterans of the uprising.
The president was taking part in ceremonies on Sunday held ahead of the 74th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising, meeting with veterans of the fight and awarding state orders of merit.
He pointed out that although the uprising was a defeat in military terms, "although you didn't achieve a great, spectacular victory, you didn't manage to free Poland, Warsaw in some parts was free for 63 days." "If somebody asks, or polemicises over whether it was worthwhile, although I was not alive in those days (...) seeing you, the way you look at your friends, comrades in arms and at the museum, your relation to Poland today, to a free, sovereign, independent motherland - I am convinced that it was worthwhile," Andrzej Duda declared.
