Firefighters are putting out the fire inside the building, they are wearing breathing apparatus, while those working outside are using climbing equipment," said the press officer from the County Fire Service in Inowrocław, Captain Jan Skotnicki.
The spokesman for the Voivodeship Commander in Toruń, on the other hand, said that whe the firefighters had arrived at the scene, they secured the perimeter and proceeded to search and rescue mission, extinguishing the flames at the same time. "In the course of the search and rescue mission, the firefighters evacuated six people from the building. It turned out that there had been four dead people inside," said Arkadiusz Pięta and added that some other residents had managed to escape outside before firefighters arrived.
The victims of the fire were 31-year-old mother and her three children aged 3 months, four and five years.
He also informed that the fire had been put out. Construction supervisory authority is determining whether or not the building is safe for housing. "If the families won't be able to return to their homes, the city mayor will provide temporary accomodation for them, " said Piętak.
He also added that the building was being searched, but for 99.9 percent no one else got hurt. "We won't speculate. In regard to the cause of the fire, witness experts on firefighting and the police will have to comment," Piętak said. The Ministry of Interior Affairs and Administration informed on Monday that the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivode would arrive at the scene of the tragedy.
Piątek called upon all citizens to take care of their safety, as the heating season has begun. "Let's make sure our heating, chimneys and ventilation systems undergo maintenance, let's buy smoke and carbon monoxide detectors for our safety," the spokesman for the State Fire Service Voivodeship Commander in Toruń.
