Someone placed three little cats inside a cardboard box and then threw the box to a waste container. Employees of a waste disposal company saved them from dying. The kittens are now waiting for new owners in an animal shelter in Łódź, while the local City Guard cautions that abandoning animals could be interpreted as cruelty against them.
On Monday, employees of a waste disposal company loaded a waste container onto a garbage truck at Szeregowa street in Łódź. But right before emptying it, they stopped the system. It was because they heard meowing. They found a cardboard box inside the container. In the box they found three little cats.
The Animal Patrol was called to the scene - a special unit of the Łódź City Guard.
"The officers brought the animals to us. Luckily, they were in good condition," Marta Olesińska from Łódź animal shelter said.
The kittens are now waiting for a new home.
"It's such a great shame that we still need to remind that animals aren't things. And that animal's place is next to human, and not in garbage," Olesińska stressed.
She also said that the problem of uncontrolled breeding of animals should be dealt with through castration and spaying.
One managed to escape?
On Tuesday, a fourth little cat was found at Szeregowa street. He was roaming around the garbage container. It seems that the trapped trio were its siblings.
"The same coloration and age lead to this conclusion," Łódź City Guard officers told tvn24.pl.
Spectre of punishment
Commissioner Marcin Fiedukowicz says that abandoning an animal can be interpreted as extreme cruelty to animals.
"Polish criminal code assumes up to three years in prison for this crime. We always treat such cases very seriously and try to identify whoever was behind them," Fiedukowicz said.
