The Regional Court in Turek (Greater Poland Voivodeship) on Thursday decided to place 19-year-old Maciej J. under arrest. The teenager has been accused of murdering his younger brother.
The spokesperson for the District Prosecutor's Office in Konin, Aleksandra Marańda, told Polish Press Agency (PAP) the court had shared the prosecution's view and had placed Maciej J. under 3-month arrest. "The defendant refused to give any statement or to answer any questions before the court," the prosecutor said. She added that the investigators had verified the age of the victim - Adam J. was 10 years old, not 9 as it had been said earlier on.
On Wednesday evening, the 19-year-old Maciej J. was questioned as a suspect regarding the murder of his brother Adam. The teenager pleaded not guilty and refused to give any statement.
According to initial and unconfirmed information, Maciej J. attacked his younger brother with a knife during a fight over a computer game. The prosecutor's office denied these news. "In the charges, as well as for the purpose of the investigation, we've took the view that the incident happened due to unspecified reason," prosecutor Marańda said.
On Tuesday about 12.45 the police in Turek were notified about a domestic disturbance in one of the flats at Osiedle Wyzwolenie street. Upon arrival, the officers found the heavily wounded 10-year-old in one of the rooms. Despite resuscitation attemps, the boy couldn't have been saved.
The post-mortem revealed 17 stab and cut wounds on the victim's corpse. According to expert witness, the wounds could have been inflicted with a kitchen knife secured at the scene. In the moment of the tragedy, apart from the brothers, their grandmother was also in the flat. The teenager has been detained. He was sober. Blood samples have been taken from him in order to determine if he had been under the influence of psychotropic substances. The results are expected in a few days.
Murder carries minimum sentence of 8 years, up to life in prison.
