Natalia and Mykola were returning home from work when they saw that someone threw a bag out of the window. They picked the bag up and took it home. When they realised that the bag contained money and jewellery, the Ukrainian citizens decided to notify the police. They could not do it over the phone due to the language barrier. Mykola decided to approach a police car parked next to their building. It turned out that the officers were speaking with senior citizens who had thrown the bag out of the window.
The situation took place on April 27 in Bartodzieje district of Bydgoszcz. Scammers impersonating police officers called a senior couple, told them that their saving were in danger and that they would take part in a special police operation aimed at apprehending the suspects.
"They talked the seniors into putting their money in Polish and foreign currency, as well as jewellery, in a plastic bag and throwing it out of the window. Not suspecting that it was a scam attempt, they almost got rid of their savings and valuables," Bydgoszcz City Police said.
The scammers were not quick enough to pick up the bag as two Ukrainian citizens, who were returning home from work, saw it being thrown outside. "The man and the woman thought that someone had thrown garbage out and so they took the bag with them," police officers said.
They rescued senior couple's savings
Only back at home did they realise that the bag contained money and jewellery. They immediately decided to notify the police, but they could not do it over the phone due to the language barrier.
"Then the man looked out of the window and saw a police car parked in the neighbourhood. He quickly went outside and waited for the officers who, as it later turned out, were speaking with the scammed seniors. The elderly couple realised they got tricked the moment they threw the bag out.
When the officers returned to the car, the Ukrainian citizen returned the bag and tried to explained what happened.
"We confirmed that this way the man and the woman had rescued the savings of the seniors from Bydgoszcz," the officers said.
On Friday (April 29), Natalia and Mykola were invited to inner city police station by chief Witold Markiewicz, along with his deputy and station chief, thanked them for their exemplary conduct.
