Chances that the two missing cavers in Wielka Śnieżna cave are absolutely minimal, given the conditions that are down there, but we're fighting until the end, until we find them - Jan Krzysztof, the chief of the Tatra Volunteer Search and Rescue (TOPR) Jan Krzysztof.
"However, we are aware that the risk of a deep hypothermia is very high in such conditions. We know such cases from history. The very fact that the cavers managed to go down there shows that they are qualified spelunkers, physically fit to enter this extreme area," Krzysztof said.
He added that the exploration of the cave in that area is extremely difficult and not many cavers are able to go down there.
"From sportsmanship perspective, it's a very ambitious task. Such mission can be compared to what is being done in the highest mountains. Cave explorers are aware of the risk," he explained.
He added that, as long as no extreme obstacles appear, that would make the rescue mission impossible, the rescuers will continue to drill the tunnel and blow up the rocks, until tehy find the missing men. The whole team responsible for transporting the missing up the surface is standing by.
Wednesday was the fifth day of the search. The cavers went missing on Saturday (August 17).
