Rescuers have found the body of one of the two missing spelunkers, who went missing on Saturday (August 17) in the Wielka Śnieżna cave in the Tatra Mountains - Tatra Volunteer Search and Rescue (TOPR) duty officer Krzysztof Długopolski informed on Thursday evening.
WATCH THE FULL EDITION OF TVN24'S NEWS IN ENGLISH AT TVN24 GO The two cavers became trapped in the Wielka Sniezna cave, the longest and deepest in the Tatra mountains, on Saturday (August 17) and rescue services were notified by colleagues who had accompanied them on the excursion.
TOPR aided by their fellow-rescuers from Slovakia, Horska Zachranna Sluzba, were working around the clock since Saturday order to widen the narrow passage to the cavern where the missing cavern were exploring. In order to it they had to use explosives. TOPR chief Jan Krzysztof said that search operation in such conditions is extremely difficult.
On Thursday morning, a natural rockfall in the cave slowed down the operation. As soon as the team managed to fix the damage, they started to drill again.
Later that day, in the evening, the rescuers found the body of one of the missing cavers. TOPR chief said during the operation that chances of their survival were minimal. The temperature inside the cave is a steady 4 degrees Celsius.
TOPR said that further information regarding the search in the Wielka Śnieżna would be announced on Friday.
