Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki's younger daughter goes to a private Catholic school in Warsaw at which fees for one year begin at 13,000 zlotys (approx. 2,900 euros). "You're not giving the highest rate to Poland's public education system," the Left MP Anna-Maria Żukowska said.
On new school year inauguration on Monday (September 4), PM Morawiecki published a photo of his daughter standing in front of one of Warsaw's private Catholic schools.
"We've also started another school year today. Sweetheart, remember you can always count on me. Especially with maths and later with HiT (History and Modernity - a recently introduced subject for secondary schools)" - he wrote on social media.
Many internet users commented on the PM's post, pointing out the fees charged by the school he had chosen for his daughter. The entry fee stands at 1,200 zlotys. One school year for grades 1-6 costs 13,000 zlotys, while the higher grades start at 14,000 (approx. 3,113 euros). The fees for secondary education are even higher: depending on the class chosen, the prices can reach up to 28,500 zlotys per year (approx. 6,339 euros).
Not the best recommedation of public education
Anna-Maria Żukowska, a left-wing MP, commented on Morawiecki's choice regarding his daughter's education. "Indeed, by sending (your) kids to a private school, you don't really have to be concerned with your education minister's antics."
"You're not giving the highest rate to Poland's public education system," she added.
Dorota Łoboda of Civic Coalition, chief of education commission at Warsaw City Council, spoke about this issue with "Gazeta Wyborcza". "PiS reassures us that everything's great with public schools, (education) minister Czarnek denies there's not enough teacher and psychologists. If it's so fantastic, then why prime minister Morawiecki has sent his daughter to a non-public school?" - she asked.
"It's hard to speak about equal access to education in Poland. The PiS government has ruined it so badly that anyone who can afford it takes their kids out of this system and pays for private tutors. The prime minister has sent a clear message that even doesn't trust public education," Łoboda stressed.
