President Andrzej Duda will appoint Donald Tusk's cabinet on Wednesday (Dec.13) at 9 a.m. - head of the president's office Grażyna Ignaczak-Bandych announced on Monday evening. After having been approved by the parliament as Poland's new PM earlier that day, Tusk was invited by Duda for a face-to-face meeting.
As part of a so-called second constitutional step, the Polish parliament on Monday voted in favor of Civic Platform chairman Donald Tusk becoming Poland's new prime minister. Earlier that day, the Sejm rejected PM Mateusz Morawiecki's cabinet in a vote of confidence.
After the voting session, President Andrzej Duda invited Donald Tusk for a one-on-one meeting. After said meeting, head of the president's office Grażyna Ignaczak-Bandych, announced what had been decided.
"It's been agreed that, once the confidence vote has been granted, the appointment of the new government will be held on Wednesday, Dec.13, at 9:00 at the Presidential Palace," she said.
By backing Donald Tusk as Poland's new PM, the Sejm has put an end to eight years of nationalist rule of Jarosław Kaczyński's PiS party and setting the stage for a thawing of relations with the European Union.
Addressing the parliament after a majority of lawmakers voted for him, Tusk said he was in the debt of voters "who believed in this new, magnificent, Polish hope".
"This is really something extraordinary, that from tomorrow we will be able to repair the harm, so that everyone in Poland, everyone without exceptions, all Polish citizens, will really feel at home, without any exception at all, including your (speaking to Law and Justice lawmakers) voters, and I can promise that today. Thank you again Poland, this is really a beautiful day," Tusk added.
Majority of MPs applauded Tusk and chanted his name in the chamber after the vote.
Poland has seen tens of billions of euros of European Union funds frozen due to a dispute with Brussels over democratic standards, but Tusk, a former European Council president, has vowed to mend relations and unblock the cash.
