Polish President Andrzej Duda will travel to Washington on Wednesday to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump and unveil a deal to bolster U.S. military presence in Poland.
Duda told Reuters in an interview on Monday (June 10) the deal foresees more troops, command and logistics capability but not quite the 'Fort Trump' suggested last year by Warsaw.
Warsaw's nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) government has sought more U.S. involvement in Poland since coming to power in 2015, as part of its effort to deter potential aggression from an increasingly emboldened Russia.
When Duda visited the United States last September, he proposed naming a new base after Trump and providing $2 billion in funding for it.
The U.S. already has troops in Poland as part of a 2016 agreement with the NATO military alliance in response to Moscow's annexation of Crimea from Poland's neighbour Ukraine in 2014. In February, U.S. Vice President re-affirmed support for Poland while in Warsaw for the finalisation on a deal for Poland to purchase new rocket artillery.
