What we need today is European unity, both within the EU, and the NATO; only this way can we protect peace and the international law, because as long as it's being upheld, there's no risk of war - Poland's President Andrzej Duda said on Monday in Brussels.
Poland's leader met on Monday in Brussels with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel. He later told reporters that "the absolutely primary and key topic" of these talks was the situation in the East - both in Ukraine and Belarus - as well as what steps to take in current circumstances.
"We've agreed that what we first and foremost need is European unity, unity, and unity once again - both within the EU, and the NATO," Duda said. "Only this way can we protect peace and the international law, which is of fundamental essence, because as long as it's being upheld, there's no risk of war, and peace is maintained," he added.
"Good exchange with President @AndrzejDuda on the security situation and Russia’s military build-up," EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Twitter. "We are coordinating deeply our preparedness, including on energy supply, and on sanctions to respond to any further escalation," she added.
"We also discussed the objective of having a robust judicial system in Poland, in line with EU standards," von der Leyen said in a separate tweet.
Referring to this issue, president Duda expressed satisfaction that his proposal regarding the Supreme Court had met with positive reception from both the EU executive, and the head of the European Council. "It's quite a relief that this initiative has emerged," he said.
The presidential project assumes, among other things, liquidation of the Supreme Court Disciplinary Chamber, and replacing it with a new "Chamber of Professional Responsibility".
"I have presented my view on this matter, my intentions, and expressed hope that this would help us to end the dispute between the European Commission and the Polish government, as well as fix the situation in the Supreme Court in Poland, which is difficult today," Duda stressed.
Andrzej Duda reiterated his call for unity within the EU also in the context of the rule of law concerns in Poland. "Any disputes within the European Union today are grist for the mill for enemies of European unity, for our enemies, basically. And we shouldn't give them this fodder, and close all our disputes as soon as possible," the president added.
