During this year's summer holidays, 644 people died in road accidents and 203 drowned - the General Police Headquarters (KGP) informed on Wednesday. According to the police, this year's summer was safer than the last.
"During the whole summer period, and I need to remind that this year's holidays were longer than in 2018, 203 people have drowned," the spokesperson for the KGP, Inspector Mariusz Ciarka, informed on Wednesday. He explained that it's 15 people less than last year. "This is positive news but it's still 203 people too many. We would want these numbers to all zeros," he said.
Ciarka thanked the police officers who saved drowning people, both in the line of duty and during their time off. "We need to talk about such cases, to set a good example," he underscored.
Deputy Inspector Radosław Kobryś presented road statistics for the period between June 19 and September 1. He said that there had been over 6.800 accidents which took the lives of 644 people and leaving over 8.000 injured. He added that only during the summer period, the police had stopped nearly 26.000 drunk drivers.
"This was initial data. We're estimating that it will be around 2.000 DUIs more than last year. For the first time in a decade we're seeing a surge in the number of drunk drivers," he stressed.
