Warsaw Inner City Police officers have detained the third man suspected of attacking activists from Food Not Bombs group while they were serving food to homeless people - the spokesman for the Capital Police Headquarters Senior Commissioner Sylwester Marczak said on Tuesday.
The spokesman said that the 21-year-old detained on Monday evening spent the night in a police remand centre.
He added that he was the last missing suspect in connection to the attack from December 22. "Today, further proceedings with the suspect will take place," Marczak said.
On December 22, in front of the entrance to Centrum metro station, members of the Food Not Bombs (FNB) organisation were serving food to people in need. In a video posted on the FNB's Facebook account, three men approach the FNB stand and destroy the banner. "We've been sprayed with gas, roughed up and offended," the activists wrote on Facebook. The suspects are also said to have been making Nazi salutes and shouting slogans, as well as attacking random passers-by.
One suspect, a 16-year-old, was detained already on the day of the accident, whereas the second one, a 22-year-old, the following day. The latter has heard seven charges, including public propagating of fascist ideology.
The remaining charges pertain to: violation of personal integrity of both FNB members and people reacting to the attack, insult, as well as coercing the victims to certain actions.
One of the detained men has been arrested by the court for three months. Food Not Bombs is a loose-knit group of independent collectives, sharing free vegan and vegetarian food with others. Food Not Bombs' ideology is that myriad corporate and government priorities are skewed to allow hunger to persist in the midst of abundance.
The Food Not Bombs movement was established in the 1980s in the United Kingdom and has spread all over the world since then. In Poland, the FNB missions are being organised in most of the major cities. In Warsaw, the action is held each Sunday at 6pm next to the entrance to Centrum metro station.
