The spokesperson for the Central Bureau of Police Investigations Iwona Jurkiewicz informed that the police have detained a man who had been gathering explosive materials in his flat at Kossobudzkiego street in Płock.
"Very alarming information"
The spokesman for the Main Police Hedquarters (KGP) Inspector Mariusz Ciarka revealed the details of the operation. He said that the investigators had learned that a 47-year-old resident of Płock, holding a degree and specialist technical knowledge, has been buying components for preparing powerful explosives. "We received very alarming information that this man had been planning to turn his flat into 'a bomb'," the police officer said.
The 47-year-old has been detained outside the building, in order to prevent him from access to the explosives.
"It turned out that there was a significant amount of explosive materials in the flat, already prepared for detonation. The collected evidence clearly suggests that the suspect wanted to blow up the flat and the building," Ciarka said.
Man charged
As Inspector Ciarka said, experts had estimated that an explosion in a 11-storey block would have caused an unimaginable tragedy and killed hundreds.
"The man has been already charged with illegal possession of explosive materials and endangering life and health of many people, as well as risking damage to significant amount of property, said the KGP spokesman.
Evacuation
Due to bomb disposal unit operation all residents were evacuated from the building, as well as everyone from a nearby school and preschool.
"Over 160 people were evacuated. Some of them went to to their relatives, others went to work," said the spokesperson for Płock police Marta Lewandowska.
After 12.00, four police cars, including two bomb disposal unit trucks, took the explosives away from the building at Kossobudzkiego street.
Before 1pm, the police spokesperson informed that the residents could return to their homes.
