Investigators on Friday were waiting for autopsy results of a 93-year-old murdered in the hospital in Gdańsk's Zaspa district. Traces and evidence from the scene were secured and witnesses questioned. The man suspected of murder was taken to a police remand centre and was waiting to be questioned.
The spokeswoman for the District Prosecutor's Office in Gdańsk Grażyna Wawryniuk said on Friday that the autopsy was underway of the 93-year-old murdered in the hospital in Zaspa district. Investigators were awaiting for the results. At the crime scene, traces and evidence were secured and witnesses questioned.
The incident happened on Friday around 3am at the internal diseases ward of St. Wojciech Hospital in Zaspa. One patient, a 61-year-old resident of Sopot, attacked his 93-year-old roommate. The victim received several blows to the head.
Prosecutor Wawryniuk told Polish Press Agency (PAP) that all findings appeared to suggest the man attacked the victim with medical equipment at hand. "The equipment was secured by the investigators," she added.
Trying to escape, the 61-year-old also attacked a nurse who had found the body of the murdered patient. The woman was in good physical condition. She was taken home and offered psychological help.
"Both the victim and the perpetrator were staying inside the same double room as patients and they never knew each other before," the hospital director Dariusz Kostrzewa said at a press conference on Friday.
The 61-year-old was detained outside the hospital and taken to a police remand centre. The prosecutor's office did not inform when the suspect would be questioned at the time.
According to PAP, the man did not require medical attention or hospitalization. The investigators will be establishing why the 61-year-old was admitted to the internal diseases ward. The suspect was in the same room with the victim for only a few hours, before that he had spent nearly two days at the A&E.
